A storefront with a long memory

as the Hawkinson Bros. grocery

Seventy years of groceries

Built by a local iceman for $6,000, this building became home to the Hawkinson Bros. grocery in 1909.

For seventy years, until 1979, Linden Hills did its grocery shopping here. Early on, orders went out to neighbors' doors by horse and buggy.

One building, many chapters

1909: Hawkinson Bros. grocery opens.

1979: The Linden Hills Co-op moves into 4308, staying until 1995.

1979: The Utne Reader is founded in an office upstairs.

Until 2026: Heartfelt, a longtime neighborhood staple. We're grateful to follow them.

Next: The Bluff opens this holiday season.

Building history from 1909 to 1995 is from the Linden Hills Walking Tours: Commercial District, published by the Linden Hills History Study Group.

1909 to 1979: Feeding the neighborhood

Seventy years of groceries came through these doors. We're keeping the counter busy, now with good coffee and something sweet alongside it.

A building that has always looked after its neighbors

The early days: Neighbors first

Orders once went out to neighbors' doors by horse and buggy. That kind of care is the standard we're holding ourselves to.

1979: Room for good ideas

A magazine got its start in an office upstairs. We hope the tables downstairs spark a few conversations of their own.

The Bluff picks up the story: a neighborhood stop where the coffee is good and the shelves are worth a browse.

A cafe and a curated shop under one roof, in the building that sold Linden Hills its groceries for seventy years. Come in for a cup, stay for the conversation, and leave with something you didn't know you needed.

Be first through the door

Opening news and first looks. Nothing else.
